Permits: assume you need one

A basement renovation almost always involves new wiring somewhere — new outlets for a media room, new lighting circuits, a bathroom rough-in, or a bedroom that now needs code-required outlet spacing and AFCI protection. Any of that triggers a permit requirement. Pull the permit before finishing walls, not after — an inspector needs to see the wiring while it's still open, and closing up unpermitted work is one of the most common (and expensive) mistakes in basement projects.

Signs of outdated or dangerous wiring

  • Aluminum branch wiring — common in homes built roughly 1965–1975, identifiable by the dull silver-grey colour of the conductor. Not automatically unsafe, but requires connections rated for aluminum (like AlumiConn connectors) rather than standard wire nuts.
  • Knob-and-tube wiring — an early wiring method using ceramic knobs and tubes with no ground conductor. Still found in some pre-1950s basements and attics; most insurers require its removal, and it's incompatible with modern insulation practices.
  • Cloth or rubber-insulated wiring that's brittle, cracked, or crumbling to the touch
  • Ungrounded 2-wire circuits feeding modern 3-prong outlets via a cheater adapter
  • Any splice outside of a proper, accessible junction box — a common shortcut in older DIY basement work

Signs of dangerous wiring behind walls

Once framing and drywall go up, wiring problems become much harder to catch — which is exactly why they're worth checking for before you close anything in:

  • Staples driven through cable insulation rather than just securing it — a common damage point from rushed original installs
  • Cable run through drilled holes too close to the framing edge, leaving it vulnerable to a future drywall screw or nail
  • Wire nuts or splices with exposed copper, or connections that feel loose when gently tugged
  • Scorch marks or melted insulation anywhere along a run — evidence of a past overheating event that may not be resolved
  • Wiring that changes gauge mid-run without a proper junction and connector rated for the transition

Basement-specific code considerations

When to stop and call a licensed electrician

Basement renovations are also one of the most common places homeowners underestimate scope — what starts as "just running a few new outlets" often turns into a full circuit rework once the existing wiring is actually assessed.
