CEC Rules for Branch Receptacle Circuits

  • CEC Rule 8-304 limits general-purpose 15A residential branch circuits to a maximum of 12 outlets/receptacles per circuit (considered 1A per outlet baseline).
  • For continuous loads (running 3+ hours like space heaters), maximum safe load on a 15A circuit is 12 Amps (1,440 Watts — 80% rule).
  • High-draw heating appliances (1500W space heaters, hairdryers) should ideally be given their own dedicated or low-load circuit.
