Modern electrical installations prioritize arc-fault protection across all living areas. Here are the core rules every homeowner must know:
- Kitchen Countertops (Rule 26-712 / 26-722) Requires a minimum of two 20A branch circuits. Outlets must be spaced so no point along a counter is more than 900 mm (3 ft) from an outlet. Outlets within 1.5 m (5 ft) of a sink must be GFCI-protected.
- Split Receptacle (15A Multi-Wire Branch Circuit) Caution When replacing an older kitchen split-receptacle (fed by a 3-wire red/black/white cable), you must break off the brass/gold tab connecting the hot terminals. Leaving this tab intact short-circuits both 120V phases together (240V direct short) and will instantly blow your breaker.
- Smoke Alarm Circuit Rule (Rule 30-500) In Ontario, hardwired smoke alarms are typically wired on a mixed circuit with a regularly used lighting branch. If the breaker trips, loss of room lighting alerts the homeowner immediately that fire protection has lost main power.
- ESA Permit Notice Replacing an existing outlet or switch does not require a permit. However, running new wire, adding new outlets, finishing a basement, or installing high-draw chargers strictly requires an Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) permit in Ontario.
