Know what you're dealing with before you start
Not every switch box is wired the same, and the type of switch you're replacing determines how many wires you'll find and how they're connected. Before you touch anything, kill the breaker and identify which of these three setups you have:
- Single-pole switch — one switch controls one light. Two brass terminals (or one brass + a "load" marking), plus ground.
- 3-way switch — two switches control the same light from two locations (e.g. top and bottom of a staircase). No "off/on" printed on the toggle, and three terminals plus ground.
- 4-way switch — used between two 3-way switches when a light is controlled from three or more locations. Four terminals plus ground, no common terminal.
3-way vs 4-way, in plain English
Despite the name, a "3-way switch" doesn't mean three switches — it means the switch has three terminals, and you use two of them together to control a light from two locations. A "4-way switch" has four terminals and gets added between two 3-way switches when you want to control a light from three or more locations, like a long hallway with entrances at both ends and in the middle.
- 1 location controls the light → single-pole switch (2 terminals)
- 2 locations control the light → two 3-way switches (3 terminals each)
- 3+ locations control the light → two 3-way switches on the ends, one or more 4-way switches in between (4 terminals each)
With the power off and the switch out of the box, count the terminals (ignoring the ground screw): 2 terminals = single-pole, 3 terminals = 3-way (one terminal, usually a different colour, is the common — the other two are travelers), 4 terminals = 4-way (no common terminal at all, just two pairs of travelers). Traveler wires are interchangeable with each other, but neither one should ever land on the common terminal — that single distinction is responsible for the vast majority of 3-way and 4-way wiring mistakes.

Standard incandescent-rated dimmers cause flickering, buzzing, or early failure on LED bulbs. Always match the dimmer to the bulb type.
Dimmers: it's not just a switch swap
A dimmer isn't a drop-in replacement for any switch — it needs to match both the bulb type and the load on the circuit:
- LED bulbs need LED-rated (or "trailing-edge") dimmers. Standard dimmers built for incandescent loads will flicker, buzz, or shorten bulb life on LEDs.
- Check the minimum/maximum wattage rating. Most dimmers have a minimum load — too few low-wattage LEDs on the circuit can cause flickering even with the right dimmer.
- 3-way dimming needs a compatible 3-way dimmer pair — you generally can't mix a standard 3-way switch with a dimmer on the same circuit without a dimmer designed for that pairing.
Smart switches and dimmers: the neutral wire question
Most smart switches and smart dimmers need a neutral wire in the switch box to power their internal electronics — something older homes often don't have, since traditional switch loops only ran hot and switched-hot wires. A single 2-wire cable runs from the light fixture down to the switch and back, carrying only a hot and switched-hot wire; the neutral for that circuit stays up at the light fixture and never enters the switch box at all. That's completely normal for a mechanical switch, since it doesn't need power for itself — it's only smart electronics that create a problem.
Before buying a smart switch, kill the power, remove the switch, and look for a bundle of white wires capped together with a wire nut, tucked to the back or side of the box, not connected to the switch itself. That's your neutral — if it's there, most smart switches will work. If you only see black/red wires and no white bundle, you have three real options: use a "no-neutral" smart switch or dimmer designed for exactly this situation (though these can sometimes cause minor flickering with certain LED bulbs), have an electrician run a new neutral wire in, or use a smart bulb instead of a smart switch, which sidesteps the wiring question entirely at the cost of needing the wall switch left permanently "on."
Step-by-step: replacing a standard switch, dimmer, or 3-way/4-way switch
- Kill the power at the panel. Switch off the breaker feeding this circuit — don't just flip the switch itself off.
- Verify it's dead. Test with your voltage tester before removing the cover plate. Confirm the tester works on a known-live outlet first.
- Remove the cover plate and switch. Unscrew the plate, then the two mounting screws holding the switch in the box.
- Photograph and label the wiring before disconnecting anything — your reference for reassembly, especially critical on 3-way and 4-way setups.
- Identify the common terminal on 3-way switches. It's usually a different colour (often black or copper) than the two brass traveler terminals — label it if you're not confident.
- Disconnect and inspect the wire ends for damage; trim and re-strip if needed.
- Land the wires on the new device exactly as photographed — common-to-common, traveler-to-traveler, ground-to-ground.
- Seat the switch in the box, fold the wires neatly, and secure the mounting screws.
- Reattach the cover plate.
- Restore power and test from every switch location that controls this light.
⚠️ Common mistake: mixing up traveler wires
On 3-way and 4-way switches, the two "traveler" wires are interchangeable with each other but must never be connected to the common terminal. Landing a traveler on the common terminal typically doesn't damage anything, but it will make the light behave unpredictably — working from one switch but not the other, or only turning off from one position. If your light "half-works" after a swap, this is almost always the cause.
Replacing a light fixture
- Kill the power at the panel feeding the fixture, and verify dead at the fixture box with a voltage tester.
- Support the old fixture while removing its mounting screws — don't let it hang from the wires alone.
- Disconnect the wires, matching black-to-black (hot), white-to-white (neutral), and ground-to-ground as you photograph the layout first.
- Check the mounting box. If the box isn't rated to support the new fixture's weight (common with heavier fixtures replacing a light builder-grade one), you'll need a fixture-rated box before continuing.
- Connect the new fixture's wires to the matching circuit wires, cap with wire nuts, and tuck neatly into the box.
- Mount the new fixture per its instructions, then restore power and test.
Installing a ceiling fan
A ceiling fan is a heavier, vibrating load — the single biggest difference from a standard fixture swap is what's holding it up.
- Use a fan-rated electrical box, not a standard fixture box. Fan-rated boxes are built and braced to handle the weight and vibration; a standard box can work loose or fail over time.
- Confirm ceiling joist support or a proper brace bar spanning between joists — most fan-rated boxes mount to one of these rather than directly to drywall.
- If the fan includes a light kit and a wall control with separate fan/light switching, you may be working with an extra wire (often blue or red) beyond the standard black/white/ground — trace and label each conductor before disconnecting anything.
- Balance the blades once installed; a wobbling fan is usually a balance issue, not a wiring issue.
When to stop and call a licensed electrician
If you find more wires in the box than you expected, if the box is shared with another circuit, if you're missing a ground wire, if the existing box isn't rated for a ceiling fan's weight, or if you want to add a smart switch but there's no neutral present — stop and call a professional. Adding new wiring (not just swapping a device) may also require a permit.
