Testing if a circuit is live

Before any receptacle work — replacing, adding, or troubleshooting — confirming a circuit is actually dead is the single most important step. A non-contact voltage tester is the easiest tool for this: hold the tip near the outlet slots or a wire without touching bare metal, and it lights up or beeps if voltage is present. Always test the tester itself on a known-live outlet first, so you know it's actually working before you rely on a "no voltage" reading. For a more definitive check, a plug-in outlet tester inserted into the receptacle can confirm both that it's dead and, once power is restored, that it's wired correctly (proper hot/neutral/ground).

Replacing a receptacle safely

A worn, loose, or cracked receptacle (outlet) is one of the most common — and most beginner-friendly — electrical repairs in a home. Here's how to do it without guesswork.

Confirm which breaker feeds the receptacle, then shut it off at the panel and verify the outlet is dead with a non-contact voltage tester before touching any wires. Never rely on the switch or breaker label alone — mislabeled panels are common.

Step-by-step

  1. Kill the power at the panel. Switch off the breaker feeding this circuit — don't just flip the wall switch.
  2. Verify it's dead. Test the receptacle with your voltage tester before removing the cover plate. Test the tester itself on a known-live outlet first.
  3. Remove the cover plate and receptacle. Unscrew the plate, then the two mounting screws holding the device in the box.
  4. Photograph the wiring. Before disconnecting anything, take a photo of how the wires are landed — it's your reference for reassembly.
  5. Note wire colours and terminals. Black (hot) to the brass terminal, white (neutral) to the silver terminal, bare/green (ground) to the green terminal.
  6. Disconnect and inspect. Loosen terminal screws, remove the old receptacle, and check the wire ends for damage — trim and re-strip if needed.
  7. Match the new device rating. A 15A circuit gets a 15A receptacle, a 20A circuit gets a 20A-rated device — don't mix these up.
  8. Land the wires on the new receptacle. Hot to brass, neutral to silver, ground to green, matching what you photographed.
  9. Seat the receptacle in the box. Fold the wires neatly, orient the ground pin down (or per local convention), and secure the mounting screws.
  10. Reattach the cover plate.
  11. Restore power and test. Switch the breaker back on, then test the outlet with a plug-in tester or your voltage tester.
  12. Double-check for warmth or odor. A warm cover plate or any burning smell means stop and re-check your connections immediately.

⚠️ CRITICAL WARNING: Split Receptacles (Removing the Connecting Tab)

In older Canadian homes (built prior to arc-fault / GFCI requirements), kitchen counter outlets were commonly wired as Split Plugs fed by a multi-wire 3-wire cable (Red hot, Black hot, shared White neutral) giving 240V across the two hots.

When replacing a split receptacle, YOU MUST BREAK AND REMOVE THE METAL CONNECTING TAB between the two gold/brass screws on the hot side. If you forget to break this tab and turn the power back on, the Red and Black 120V lines will short together (240V direct short), instantly blowing the double-pole breaker!

The AFCI trend: it's easier to ask "where DON'T I need one?"

Arc-fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) protection has expanded so far into modern branch circuit requirements that it's often faster to identify the few circuits that don't need it than to list every one that does. If you're replacing a receptacle on a circuit that's already AFCI-protected at the panel, no extra device work is needed — the protection lives at the breaker. Tamper-resistant receptacles: recommended everywhere

Rather than trying to track exactly which locations require tamper-resistant (TR) receptacles, the simpler and safer approach is to use TR receptacles for any replacement, throughout the home. The added child-safety protection costs very little extra and removes the guesswork entirely — a good default to reach for whenever you're already swapping a device.

Adding a new outlet

Unlike a like-for-like swap, adding a brand-new outlet means running new wiring — either extending from an existing outlet on the same circuit or running a new dedicated circuit from the panel. This is a meaningfully bigger project than a replacement:

  • Check the existing circuit's capacity first. Adding a new outlet to an already-loaded circuit can push it over its safe limit — use our Load calculator to check before you extend anything.
  • Fishing wire through finished walls is the hardest part of most new-outlet jobs — it typically means cutting access points in drywall, which adds patching to the job.
  • New wiring generally requires a permit, even for something as small as a single added outlet — see our Permits guide for what qualifies.
  • Box fill matters. Adding a new device to an existing box (rather than a standalone new box) means checking that the box isn't already at its wire-fill capacity.

When to stop and call a licensed electrician

If the wiring doesn't match a standard black/white/ground setup, if you find aluminum wiring, scorch marks, or a melted box, or if the circuit doesn't test dead after switching the breaker — stop and call a professional.
