What arc faults actually are
- An arc fault is unintended electrical arcing — sparking — from a loose connection, damaged insulation, or a nicked wire (like from a nail or staple).
- Arcing generates intense localized heat, which is why it's a leading cause of electrical fires, particularly in older wiring.
- AFCI breakers are specifically designed to detect the electrical signature of arcing and trip before it becomes a fire — standard breakers don't catch this.
