Why lights flicker

Occasional, brief flickering across the whole house is often just normal voltage fluctuation from large appliances (like an AC or fridge compressor) cycling on. A single fixture flickering points somewhere more local: a loose bulb, a dimmer that isn't rated for the bulb type, or a loose wire connection at the fixture or switch. Flickering that's isolated to one circuit and comes with warmth or a burning smell is a different category entirely — stop and treat it as a safety issue, not a nuisance.

Why breakers trip

  • Overload — too many devices drawing power on one circuit at once. The fix is redistributing the load, not a bigger breaker.
  • Short circuit — a hot wire contacting a neutral or ground wire, often from damaged insulation or a wiring fault. Trips immediately and repeatedly.
  • Ground fault — current leaking to ground, commonly through a damaged appliance cord or a GFCI-protected circuit doing its job correctly.
  • Arc fault — a loose connection or damaged wire creating small arcs, which an AFCI breaker is specifically designed to catch before it becomes a fire.

A breaker that trips once under a heavy load (like running a space heater and a hair dryer together) is usually just doing its job. A breaker that trips repeatedly, trips with nothing unusual plugged in, or won't reset at all is a signal to stop guessing and call a professional.

Why outlets are warm

A warm outlet almost always means excess resistance somewhere in the connection — a loose terminal screw, a worn-out receptacle that no longer grips the plug firmly, or a connection carrying more current than it's rated for. This is not a "keep an eye on it" symptom: a warm outlet or cover plate means stop using it and get it checked before it progresses to a burning smell or worse.

Why outlets stop working

  • A tripped GFCI upstream. Multiple outlets are often wired through one GFCI receptacle — check nearby outlets (especially in kitchens, bathrooms, and garages) for one with a tripped reset button.
  • A tripped breaker at the panel feeding that circuit.
  • A loose or failed connection at the outlet itself, or anywhere upstream on that circuit.

Why bulbs burn out quickly

  • Voltage running higher than the bulb's rating — less common, but worth checking if it's happening across many fixtures at once
  • Vibration — fixtures near doors, garage door openers, or ceiling fans shorten bulb life through mechanical stress
  • Poor heat dissipation — enclosed fixtures trap heat, which shortens LED bulb life if the bulb isn't rated for enclosed use
  • A loose socket connection creating a poor contact and arcing at the base of the bulb

Smell of burning plastic from an outlet or switch

A burning plastic smell means insulation or a device housing is actively overheating. Shut off the breaker feeding that circuit immediately, unplug anything nearby, and don't use the outlet or switch again until it's been inspected. This is one of the clearest early-warning signs of an electrical fire risk — don't wait to see if the smell goes away on its own.

Preventing electrical fires

  • Never bypass a tripping breaker by upsizing it beyond what the wiring is rated for
  • Replace worn or cracked outlets and switches promptly rather than living with them
  • Avoid daisy-chaining power bars and extension cords as permanent wiring

Causes of power surges

Most household power surges come from within the home itself — a large appliance (fridge, AC compressor, well pump) cycling on and off creates a brief voltage spike as it draws its starting current. External surges, like from a lightning strike or utility grid switching, are less frequent but far larger, and are the main reason whole-home surge protection exists at the panel level rather than relying on point-of-use power bars alone.

  • A seasonal shift — heating, cooling, or a new high-draw appliance (space heater, pool pump, EV charger) added to your routine
  • A failing appliance drawing more current than it should, often a fridge, freezer, or water heater nearing end of life
