Common causes at a glance

  • Loose bulb or socket: most common cause for a single fixture — try reseating the bulb first.
  • Incompatible dimmer: standard dimmers built for incandescent loads flicker badly with LED bulbs.
  • Large appliance cycling: a brief whole-house dim or flicker when an A/C or fridge compressor kicks on is usually normal voltage sag, not a fault.
  • Loose connection: a loose wire at the switch, fixture, or panel — this is where warmth or buzzing becomes a real warning sign.
